DNR Deer Hunts at FDR State Park
There is NO open regular season hunting for any game allowed anywhere in FDR State Park. If the park is open (no posted closures), hikers can rest assured they will NOT see hunters in the park/along the trails anytime they are there hiking or backpacking. No reason to wear protective orange either. Now hikers and backpackers may hear gunfire coming from hunters on private land adjoining the park. Exception NOTE on hunting: The State DNR Parks Division along with DNR Enforcement division, does hold a 3- day semi-annual management deer hunt mainly in January of odd numbered years.

- During the three day hunts, the whole park will be completely closed to all other activities (including the park office, RV campground and cabins, ALL roadside parking areas/trailheads-picnic areas and pull outs /overlooks, all trails and backcountry campsites) Only hunters with special permits will allowed to park anywhere in the park (and use RV campground and cabins.) You are allowed to drive along GA 190/GA 354, C Street and Kings Gap Road, but you cannot stop at the roadside overlooks/trailheads and trail road crossings. nor enter Dowdells Knob Scenic Area. The WJSP TV Tower areas will be closed off. Anyone found parked at a trailhead and most importantly found hiking is subject to receive a citation by a GA Department of Natural Resources enforcement officer. This is for your safety. During the January 2025 hunt, 5 hikers disregarded the road signs and closed trails and went out hiking anyway. ALL got citations from a Georgia Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Officer.
- Next hunt date is January 4-5-6 2027. ...a Monday, Tuesday Wednesday...So yes you can plan a Sunday 1/3 morning/afternoon hike but NOT a backpacking trip....By late afternoon on Sunday 1/3, multiple large PARK CLOSED road signs will be out on GA 190/GA 354 and chains with signs will be put out across entrances to all trails, off roadside trailheads/crossing and remain up till Thursday morning. Backpackers and hikers can resume hiking Thursday morning 1/7/2027.
